History of Koruthodu Grama Panchayat
The history of Koruthodu was shaped by migration, agriculture, places of worship, education, social unity, and heritage.
Migration and Agricultural Development (1949-1958)
To address the severe food shortage that followed the Second World War, the marshlands in the hill regions of Kerala were opened for cultivation as part of the Additional Food Production Programme of the then Travancore-Cochin Government. This was the period when Pattom Thanu Pillai was the Chief Minister and Ekkanda Warrier was the Food Minister.
During 1949-50, approximately 268 families migrated to the Koruthodu area from various parts of Kottayam district. One acre of land was allotted to each family, and paddy cultivation was started by dividing the area into the blocks of Poonjar, Peringalam, Mannam, Puthuppally, and Koratti.
As cultivation expanded, it also spread into forest land. Farmers cultivated here while facing the challenges posed by forest officials and wild animals. The cases related to cutting trees on encroached land were later withdrawn by Law Minister V.R. Krishna Iyer, and in 1958 an order was issued to grant title deeds for the land.
Growth of Religious and Social Institutions (1952-1972)
The construction work of Sri Dharma Sastha Temple, the main place of worship of the Hindu community in Koruthodu, began on November 23, 1952. The temple was later expanded to include the sanctum sanctorum, bhajan hall, and various subsidiary deity installations.
In 1958, St. George Church, Pallippady was formed when believers gathered and offered Holy Mass in a thatched shed on the property of K.C. Thomas of Kuttikkatt. Under the leadership of Fr. Zacharias Choorakkatt, it was elevated to a chapel. It was declared a parish in 1962, following which construction of the church began.
An L.P. School was established in 1964. A convent was also started in 1972. In 1989, Bishop Mathew Vattakuzhy consecrated the church.
Fr. John Thadathil and Fr. Zacharias Choorakkatt played a crucial role in the development of the parish. Later, a church was also established at Madukka.
Another important Christian place of worship in Koruthodu is St. Mary's Jacobite Church. Based on the belief that people received healing through the intercession of St. Sebastian, this church became a major centre of devotion among the local people.
For the Muslim community, a mosque was established at Madukka under the leadership of M.A. Raheem of Puthenpuraykkal. Today, it is the main place of worship of the Muslim community in the area.
Infrastructure Development
In 1960, under the leadership of A.S. Thomas, road construction and jeep road development were carried out from Varikkani Junction to Panaykkachira Bridge. Later, local leaders also played a crucial role in the construction of the Mundakayam-Kuzhimavu road.
K.R. Bhasi migrated to Koruthodu in 1952. From 1964, he served as a member of Mundakayam Panchayat for ten years and led the development activities of the area.
Colonies and Settlement Development
One of the largest migrant colonies in Kottayam district, 504 Colony, was established in the Koruthodu area. Approximately 504 acres of land were allotted for 504 families.
The Panaykkachira Quarter-Acre Colony, which began in 1970, later grew into a large residential area. Today, approximately 600 houses are located here. Ward XIII is the only ward in the Panchayat consisting exclusively of the colony area.
Education and Sports
K.P. Thomas Master, a teacher at Koruthodu C. Kesavan Memorial High School, is a notable personality in the sports field of Kerala and India.
In 1983, he made C.K.M. High School district champions and subsequently trained several state champions. In 1995, he received the award for the best sports teacher in the state from the President. In 2002, he received the National Life Long Sports Education Award, and in 2008, he received the Reliance Group award as one of the best coaches in India.
Prominent athletes such as Anju Bobby George, Shiny Wilson, Jincy Philip, Molly Chacko, C.S. Muralidharan, and Joseph G. Abraham are his students.
Freedom Struggle and Social Leaders
In the history of Koruthodu, freedom fighter Ravindran Vaidyar holds a notable position. He spent 11 months in prison as part of the freedom struggle activities and later received the honour of President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. He carried out several activities for the development of Koruthodu.
Formation of the Panchayat
On October 2, 2005, Koruthodu Grama Panchayat was formed as the thousandth Panchayat in Kottayam district. This gave a new direction to the administrative and developmental activities of the area.

Many place names in the Koruthodu area have a history associated with nature and wildlife.

The centuries-old Muniyallu Cave located at Panaykkachira is a major centre of legends in the area. Local belief holds that kings hid here during times of war and that the name "Muniyallu" was derived from the fact that sages lived here.
Likewise, the centuries-old Paschima Devi Temple, which shares a boundary with the Grama Panchayat, is part of the cultural heritage of the area.
Religious Harmony and Cultural Heritage
Koruthodu is an excellent example of religious harmony. Temples, churches, and Muslim places of worship alike function as centres of social unity.
The feast of the Mother and St. Sebastian at St. George Church is celebrated devoutly every year in February. People belonging to different religious communities participate together in this celebration, which includes processions, musical performances, drama, fireworks, and other events.
Similarly, the festivals at St. Mary's Jacobite Church and Sri Dharma Sastha Temple add colour and unity to the cultural life of Koruthodu.
